Stellantis and Orano abandon joint venture on electric car battery recycling

Automaker Stellantis and French energy group Orano have abandoned their planned joint venture to recycle electric car batteries, according to a statement.

At the end of October 2023, the two companies announced the project by signing a non-binding protocol, which provided for the recycling of batteries and waste from Stellantis gigafactories in Europe and North America.

Specifically, today the two companies announced their intention not to “finalize” the contracts that were supposed to lead to the establishment of a joint venture active in the recycling of end-of-life batteries and gigafactory scrap. The joint statement does not specify what the reasons for the failure to reach an agreement were, but it is very likely that many of the factors that are leading to a generalized slowdown in the electrification process of the entire European automotive sector were influential in stopping the project.

In any case, Stellantis and Oran “recognize” the importance of the collaborative relationship established in recent months and therefore decided to evaluate “other potential business relationships.
