Nanoscale Components commissions industrial-scale prelithiation line

Nanoscale Components, a provider of electrochemical prelithiation technology, is commissioning its new modular GWh scale, roll-to-roll prelithiation line in North America. The unique underlying technology uses an inherently safe electrochemical reaction to eliminate the hazards posed by other prelithiation methods.

The highly automated equipment is designed to operate 24 x 7, with a modular approach that can range from industrial pilot to GWh-scale lithium-ion battery cell production.

Nanoscale says that its proprietary electrochemical prelithiation process, using a safe, low-cost lithium salt, enables battery manufacturers to produce lithium-ion cells with higher energy density, longer cycle life and reduced cell impedance.

The energy gains are significant enough, and the cost low enough, so that final cell cost/kWh is reduced. The process is effective with a range of anode materials, from pure graphite to the world’s most advanced silicon materials.

This new industrial line will allow Nanoscale to demonstrate its prelithiation technology on customer anode rolls with a wide range of compositions and lithium dosages.
